A mile marker as a child

Memorial day, originally called Decoration Day, is a holiday to commemorate those who have died in our nation’s service. As an adult I now understand and appreciate the meaning of this holiday.
But as a child I didn't understand its meaning. For me Memorial Day was a mile marker of so many things. It was a glorious day off of school! It was a day that all the swimming pools opened and my cousin and I would swim even if it were 50 degrees! It was a day that my extended family got together rain or shine (and in Indiana this inevitably meant rain) for breakfast in the park where we would eat dippy eggs! It was a reminder that there was only a handful of days left of school before summer break began! I have very fond memories of Memorial Days from my past. I hope to start some traditions with my children so they will think back on this very special day with a smile and a grateful understanding for what this day is all about.

Zany thought of the day: Ever since 9/11/01 I look at service men and women through different eyes. I get tears in my eyes every time I see someone in uniform thinking how grateful I am that they are willing to give their life to fight for my freedom and the freedom for this country. People don't have to support this war but please support our troops.

yes, I think everyone will be supporting their fellow countrymen and women, esp. this time of year. (Like the photo too)

It is a crying shame that the parade on Memorial Day isn't sparsely attended, but 4th of July the streets are crowded. We should be supporting our service men and women on this occasion. Thank you for the reminder.
