We purchased 4 pumpkins a few weeks ago and they have been taunting the kids to carve them ever since. Finally the day arrived! We decided to celebrate Columbus Day morning by carving a pumpkin. The kids shrieked and danced when they realized we were going to do something with one of the pumpkins. Wacky Zacky insisted we carve his pumpkin first so we brought it into the house and sat it on the floor.
The kids were running on high, that is until Papa Z removed the lid of the pumpkin and the PUMPKIN GUTS were exposed. There's nothing like a pumpkin full of pumpkin guts to cause a 2 and 3-year-old's energy to come to a screeching halt!
You see the Zany babies are not like most kids. They really don't like to get their hands dirty. Both Wacky Zacky and Zany Janie sat with disgusted looks on their faces as Papa Z began cleaning out the pumpkin.
Zany Janie being the more adventuresome of the two Zany kids attempted to muster up enough courage to touch the pumpkin guts while Wacky Zacky watched with an appalled look on his face.
Papa Z tried to encourage them to touch the guts, but they both kept a safe distance.
Finally after much prompting and encouragement Zany Janie plunged her little hand into the pumpkin. I can't be certain, but I think I heard Wacky Zacky retching a little.
Zany Janie got cocky and really started to smash her hands into the substance. I sat back and waited to see how long it would take her to come up with the idea of wiping her dirty paws on Wacky Zacky causing a screaming fit of all fits!
If you have read other tales about Zany Janie it will come as no surprise to you that she attempted to do a taste test with the pumpkin guts.
Finally, not to be outdone by his 2-year-old sister, Wacky Zacky manned up and began playing with the pumpkin guts. However, let's not get carried away with the story...Wacky Zacky didn't actually put his bare hands into the pumpkin. He used an ice cream scooper to touch the goo which kept him at a safe 4-5 inch distance from the guts.
After the pumpkin was cleaned out I took over and carved it with the help from four wiggly little hands.
We are all excited by how the pumpkin turned out!
We decided the kids had had enough excitement and drama for one day so we saved the other 3 pumpkins to carve another day!
Zany thought of the day: Did you know the first Jack-o-Lanterns were made in Ireland out of turnips instead of pumpkins? The turnip was hallowed out and a piece of coal was inserted into the hallow. It wasn't until the Irish brought the tradition to America that the modern day Pumpkin Jack-0-Lantern was born.

That is too much fun! Your kids are not alone in the dislike for getting their hands dirty - my 2 yr old despises it. He eats pasta and wipes his hands on a napkin after every 2 or 3 pieces, needless to say, we use a lot of napkins on pasta night!!
FUN! My favorite is separating out the pumpkin seeds so that we can run our fingers through them with no guts (this works best with a little water mixed in too). That's how we got T to get his hands dirty the first time.
how fun! I think we are doing ours this weekend. I'm anxious to see how Colby reacts to the pumpkin guts lol.
I was just waiting for Wacky Zacky to get involved. That is strange, about how the kids don't like their hands dirty. See how long that lasts! Cute pumpkin! {:-D
